There is an ever increasing educational need for qualified professionals in the kitchen and bath industry.  To meet that need, the NKBA created the Professional Development Department.  NKBA Professional Development offers courses, both in-person and through convenience learning methods, that provide the learner with the tools necessary to succeed in the demanding kitchen and bath industry.

Below you will find links to this year's available courses as well as applications for certification.

Build Your CEU's In 2010

There are a number of ways you can build your CEU's to meet your exam requirements or maintain your certification.  Take advantage of the courses NKBA offers.  The courses are offered as webinars, web-based series, on demand e-learning, and in-person.

2010 in-person courses for Southern California:

Study Groups

The Southern California Chapter offers Study Groups to those interested in sitting for the Certification exams.  Each week one book of the Professional Resource Library is discussed and a practice quiz is given.  In addition, we practice with over 1000 flashcards to reinforce the information.  The Study Groups are scheduled to prepare for and coincide with the exam dates that are held twice each year.  Our next study group will be available to join in early Fall 2010.  Click here for more information.

Certification Exams

EXAM DATES AND DEADLINES FOR 2010

AKBD Academic Exams- September 18-October 2, 2010.  Throughout these 15 days, there will be a number of locations in the Southern California area for this part of the exam.  Once you have applied and been approved to take the exam, you will be given a code to go online and select the date, time and location that best suits your needs.
(Applications deadline: June 25, 2010
Late Application Deadline: July 9, 2010)

CKD/CBD Design Exams & CKBI Exam- September 18, 2010.  This part of the exam is only administered on one day.  If you have not already taken the AKBD exam, expect that you will be taking the drawing part of the exam before you take the academic AKBD part.
(Application deadline: June 25, 2010
Late Application Deadline: July 9, 2010)

In the Los Angeles location, you may select between hand drawing or design software.  You must make that choice before you take the exam.  You will be given an exam version of the software.  It is highly recommended that you practice with the software and become extremely comfortable with it before you use it for the exam.  In all cases, please pay careful attention to the instructions about what you can and cannot bring with you to the exam.  If you have any questions, call the national office for clarification.

ABOUT EACH EXAM

The AKBD Academic Exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that tests both kitchen and bathroom competencies. The exam must be completed within a three (3) hour time frame. The examination itself is divided into four (4) major content categories as outlined in the NKBA's Role Delineation Study. These content categories are:   Planning & Design, Construction/Mechanical Systems, Business Management, and Products/Materials. Approximately 40% of the exam questions are related to Planning and Design, 22% related to Construction/Mechanical Systems, 18% to Business Management and 20% to Products/Materials. Click here for AKBD Exam Application Form.

The CKBI Exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that test kitchen and bathroom installation skills. The exam must be completed within a three (3) hour time frame. This exam tests on a broad range of installation topics found in the NKBA publications Kitchen & Bath Installation Manual Volume I and Kitchen & Bath Installation Manual Volume II.  Click here for the CKBI Exam Application Form.

The CKD, CBD, CKE, and CBE Design/Practical Exams are hand drafted design scenarios which must be completed within a six (6) hour time frame. These exams test practical skills in space planning, placement of fixtures, fitting knowledge, and basic presentation skills. The candidate is required to produce four (4) project documents:

Floor Plan

Construction/Mechanical Plan

Elevation Plan

Completed NKBA Specifications Form

Scoring is divided into the following content categories:

Graphic and Presentation Standards                                    24%

Design Solution (Planning and Safety Floor Plan)                   33%

Elevation Plan                                                                      7%

Mechanical/Construction Plan                                              13%

Specifications                                                                     23%

The CKD and CBD design exams also serve as the credential exam for CKE and CBE certifications. Click here for the CKD, CBD, CKE, and CBE Exam Application Form.

Scoring  The academic examinations are scored by CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. The CKD and CBD design/practical exams are scored by a panel of NKBA certified jurors in conjunction with CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. Each exam is scored independently by two different jurors. Juror reliability is continually monitored by the NKBA and CASTLE Worldwide, Inc.

Results  Upon completion of the certification exams, candidates receive a sealed copy of their test scores from CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. (usually within twelve [12] weeks). The NKBA also receives a printed copy of each candidate's score. If a candidate does not successfully pass either the academic or design exam, they are mailed an exam registration form so that they may re-apply for the next exam. A new application is not required for exam retakes, unless the candidate has a lapse in testing greater than two years; in that event, a new application and $75 application fee would be required. Registration forms for exam retakes must be submitted to the NKBA at least six (6) weeks before the following exam date.

CMKBD/CMKBE This hallmark certification does not require an exam. The candidates applying for this appellation must demonstrate 10 years of industry experience beyond their first design certification, and must hold both a CKD(E) and CBD(E) certification. The candidate must also submit three (3) third party endorsements, as well as 100 hours of education.  Click here for the CMKBD/CMKBE Application Form.
