Description Of Project
The project was to update the original 1970’s kitchen to reflect the home owner's contemporary taste, yet fit with in overall design aspects of adjoining rooms. The challenge was to revitalized the space utilizing the same footprint as the old kitchen to comply with the home owner's request to keep the existing tile floor intact. The solution was achieved primarily through use of exotic wood, richly colored stone and glass tiles, and lighting. The impression of increased space was attained by constructing a vaulted ceiling and extending out the window casing above the sink. Custom cabinetry faced in Japanese Sen veneer imparts a sleek, modern look to the kitchen while increasing storage space and adding special-purpose shelving to hide small appliances and eliminate counter-top clutter. Integrated veneer panels cover the major appliances to provide a seamless line. Dark Maroon Cohiba granite was chosen for the countertops and extends vertically to the floor at the ends of the lower cabinets to lend dramatic flare. Multi-color glass tiles line the wall behind the range providing a focal point to the overall design. The use of stainless steel hardware on the cabinetry, appliance handles, wall-mount hood and plumbing fixtures bring symmetry to the space to create a finished look. Layered lighting serves to both accentuate and integrate the various design elements and enhance the kitchen’s functionality. Recessed can lights in the vaulted ceiling furnish general illumination while under-cabinet lights supply practical radiance and highlight the abutting glass tiles. Use of 3” wall-wash lights and pendant lights above the peninsula furnished additional ambiance. Custom-built Oyster stools of contrasting ebonized oak and burl Japanese Sen wood add accent and provide a finishing touch to the subtly sophisticated design.
