Description Of Project
When redesigning the kitchen, breakfast and family rooms for this English Tudor home in Santa Monica, I was challenged to bring identity and architectural interest to the open floor-plan without major structural change. I set about creating a comfortable yet luxurious interior, adapting the design to serve the family of five.
The single partition wall stops abruptly, the expansive ceiling plain without moldings. Solving both concerns I create a tray detail reflecting the room’s circular shape and extending to join the partition wall. The three spaces gain identity, softly detailed crown, frieze and drapery pockets frame the ceiling and windows. Stunning custom draperies warm and connect the rooms.
Island and range centered with convenient pot faucet, I design the custom Mantle to magnificently frame the Cornufe whilst clearing the counter.
The entrance of the kitchen leads me to a triple level island design. Drawing the eye into the room I begin low with a children’s counter lifting to a stunningly profiled prep/seating counter (with refrigeration and dishwasher) and ending with a hearty butcher’s block.
Deep counters frame the Herbeau sink creating a generous clear up area.
I shorten the originally over-extended peninsula to clear the seating area whilst enlarging the breakfast room.
Refrigeration set opposing the breakfast and family room, clear the preparation areas from potentially dangerous traffic flow.
I retain the function of the pantry whilst recessing display cabinetry into walls void-space. Joining to wainscot paneling; architectural detail and warmth was brought to this heart of the three spaces.
Total renovation of the lighting perfects the room’s atmosphere which receives heavy use throughout day and evening. Chandeliers with ice-blue crystals selected at the kitchen and breakfast areas complement sconces at the family room. Carefully positioned down and art lighting wash the cabinets and pinpoint art.
