Description Of Project
The primary objective for Mr. and Mrs. Hartman was to create a space that was functional enough to entertain large parties while incorporating an elegant design that gave the long boring walls the excitement Mrs. Hartman desired. The homeowners are empty nesters that fluctuate between eating out and entertaining large parties of thirty or more. The existing kitchen had a non-useable dead corner, an island that was too small, and long walls with boring symmetrical cabinet doors.
The solution began with enlarging the island for a more functional work surface. The island granite countertop was fabricated with interesting curves to further enlarge the work area. The corner is equipped with a fully accessible L-shaped corner cabinet and revolving Lazy Susan spins with no center pole to obstruct storage space. The long walls were made more appealing with glass doors, an attention-grabbing custom wood hood, carved columns, and stainless steel appliances.
The cabinetry color is a custom mixed “Marshmallow” opaque varnish with hand applied glaze around the perimeter of the kitchen. The center island is a contrasting “Forest Green” stain with bead board applied to the sides and back. The focal point of the room is a custom wood hood with a solid wood carved valance at the front and side edges. The bead board inserts in the hood coordinate with the bead board at the island. The glass doors have “Antique” glass inserts with marginal grids. The carved columns at the corners of the island and at the cooktop help to anchor these areas by giving them weight and dimension. The Giallo Veneziano granite countertops balance nicely with the hardwood floors against the more feminine look of the light colored cabinetry and neutral tile backsplash.

Joni Zeman Greene moved from the Midwest to California in the late 1980’s where she purchased a “fixer-upper” first home in Orange. Joni, a gourmet cook, realized she had a natural affinity for design when her new kitchen turned out fabulous. This led to helping friends with their kitchen remodels and Joni recognized her true passion. Joni has worked for Reborn Cabinets for eleven years and has completed over 350 projects, both large and small. She is a Certified Kitchen Designer, a member of the NKBA, and has been published in Profiles Magazine.
